BHU Faculties 

 Faculty of Art

Founded in 1898 as the Central Hindu College, the Faculty of Arts at Banaras Hindu University is its oldest and largest faculty. Known as the ‘Mother Faculty’, it remains the nucleus of BHU, offering diverse humanities, professional, and vocational programs across 23 departments in language, culture, philosophy, and more.

Faculty of Social Science 

Established in 1971 after bifurcation from the Faculty of Arts, BHU’s Faculty of Social Sciences encompasses five key departments—Economics, History, Political Science, Psychology, and Sociology—alongside five research centers including Peace Studies and Women’s Studies, offering a robust blend of undergraduate, postgraduate, and specialized programs.

 Institute  (Faculty) of Agriculture

Established in 1931 as India’s pioneering institute for postgraduate agricultural education, it evolved into the Faculty of Agriculture in 1968 and was elevated to an autonomous Institute of Agricultural Sciences in 1980. It encompasses diverse departments, boasts extensive research farms, dairy, horticultural units, and a Krishi Vigyan Kendra.

Faculty of Law

The law school at BHU came into existence in the year 1921- 1922. It is one of the earliest faculties established in BHU. The new building was founded in the year 1964. Its foundation stone was laid down by the former Prime Minister of India, Late Shri Lal Bahadur Shastri on 28th Dec 1964. The Law School has been pioneer in introducing full time three year LL.B course of studies and two year full time LL.M. programme.


Faculty of Commerce

The Faculty of Commerce, BHU, established in 1940, is a prestigious center in Varanasi for Commerce and Business Studies. It offers diverse programs including B.Com. (Hons.), M.Com., and specialized MBAs (Financial Management, Foreign Trade, Risk & Insurance). Attaining full Faculty status in 1965, it is known for its experienced faculty and rich infrastructure, including a dedicated library and computer lab. The institution maintains a strong reputation, attracting students nationwide and internationally for its quality education.


Department of Arabics

The Department of Arabic at Banaras Hindu University, established in 1916 and independent since 1973, is a historic center for Arabic studies. It offers comprehensive programs including B.A. (Hons.), M.A., Ph.D., and diplomas.

The curriculum focuses on developing proficiency in the Arabic language, literature (classical and modern), applied grammar, translation (Arabic-English-Arabic), and the history and culture of the Arab world. Research thrust areas include comparative literature, translation, Arabic literature, and Arab history. The department plays a crucial role in promoting Indo-Arab cultural and linguistic relations.
